THE RICCARTON MEETING

NYSTAD WINS EASTER HANDICAP. HEATHERCOTE'S CHAMPAGNE STAKES. (By Telegraph-Special Correapondent.) Ciiristchurch, April l. The Canterbury Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting opened to-day. Rain fell overnight, and the morning was showery; but the weather broke before racing commenoed. Tho course was dead. There was a large attendance, and tho totalisator handled i;41,9Z4, against £36,652 on the cor. responding day last year. The Summit was withdrawn from the Kildare Hurdles, leaving' fivo 'runners. Collector was 'a good favourite, with plenty of support for Hylaus. Over tho first milo Jeannot led Bore, with Collector following, and Hyla,us bringing up tho rear. With.five furlongs to co Collector ran into second placo, and he joined Jeannot at the last fence. The pair were hard at it over'tho.last furlong, and tho position changed several times in tho run to" the post. Collector on the outside got the last stride in- and won by a heed.' Bore was six lengths away, and then at intervals came Cast Iron and Hylaus. The sensation of the day was the defeat of Almoner in the Ohampagne Stakes. Tho Boniform colt was baoked in "can't lose" fashion, but at no stago of the race did he look like a winner, and his defeat Was- proolaimed early in tho race. Torfreda began 6martly, and when she entered the straight with a good lead, and the other pair being hard ridden, it looked as if she would win, but Hcathercote finished strongly, and heat her by a length. . . Glendower was at such a short price in the Autumn Plato that several of the hig bettors preferred to chance Bagdad. The pair were the only ones seriously considered in the race, and after a great finish Bagdad got his bead in front as the post was reached. Glendower made all tho running, and, 'differently handled, he might have won. His defeat seriously dims his Great Autumn Handicap prospects. Thames ran a fair race in third place, and Majcstikofl' was fourth. Wrestler, who has burst a foot, was the only defection from the Great Easter Handicap; Sweet Corn' was a, 'good favourite, but there' was substantial backing for several of the others. After a, couplo of falso starts and a. long delay at the barrier a-fair start was effected. Ascalaphuß, Disdainful, and Kilboyne were soon m front, but the last-named then went out by himself. Croesus was in second place at the end of two furlongs, where Koesian and Nyßtad were also prominent. Oroesu3 was first into the straight, but Koesian and Nystad soon ran past him. The latter 'came away, and appeared to be winning easily, but suddenly Glorify appearod on tho outßide, and last year's winner, .had to be ridden out/ to win by a lenjth. Koesian was close up. and then- came the fast-finishing Menelaus, Kilboyne, Mohawk, Ascalpbus,. and Sweet Corn. The laßt to finish were Daytime, Adjutant, Margerine, and Disdainful. Glorify appeared to be most unlucky not to win. Tho foyourite, Sweet Corn, failed to begin well, and was in trouble the whole way. Eleus was backed down to ft short price in tho Russley Plate, but. ho more •than met his match in Punka, who, beginning smartly, led. the whole way. Oanamana and Cyrealan were prominent over the first part, but the favourite then came through, and, though he beat all the others he had no chance with Punka. Oyresian was third and Sir Fanciful next. N The public were well ou the mark in their selections for the Sockburn Handicap, when the two favourites finished in the places. These were Ladogour and Mascot, and tho difference between the pair was only a head. Spangle made the running into the straight, when the two favourites closed on her. , Over the last hall-furlong the pair were hard rid den, and they crossed the line locked together Spangle was three, lengths away and then come Brambletye! Lovesick and Linden wero the bestbaoked pair in the Gimcrack Handicap, but neither of them took part in the finish. Mortham and Donnata were in front till the 'course proper was reached, where the latter died away. Mortham' had to be ridden out to beat Love Token and Matty, who finished together. Cooing Was going very fast at tho finish, and woighed in for fourth place. He Bhould do better over two furlongs further tomorrow. Mascot was tbe only withdrawal from tho Oourtenay Welter Handicap, leaving a field of eight runners. The imported horse Almo was backed with i spirit, and no carnea more money than any other norao of the day.. Gamecock and Hot Air also carried the support of their connections. "At the start King Star led a bunched field, but with two furlongs gone Battle Eve had tuu into second place, while Gamecock whipped the field. Battle Eve was first into the straight, and he -held his advantage to the post. Hot Air jiißt beat Gamecock for second place. The favourite shaped badly. . DETAILED RESULTS.
