News from Basle .states that the British raid on Mannheim oh Monday did enormous damage. Many Muses in several parts of the town were ignited, there were explosions in a powder factory and the gasworks, pnd large holes were- torn in the principal streets, holding up the tramway sorvice. Firemen and soldiers were engaged for hours in extinguishing the (ires. The population was in a panic, and there is constant anxiety regarding further raids. ■ Many people, especially women and Children, are leaving for .Switzerland.
The South German newspapers continue their campaign against atrial reprisals, but Berlin, owing to its temporary safety, refuses to negotiate uith the Allies.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Awn.
