KARORI BOROUGH

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL.

The Mayor (Mr. B. G. H. Burn) presided over the fortnightly meeting of tho Karori Borough Council, held last evening. There were present: Councillors J. W. Henderson, T. W. Lewer, 11. lii Tingey, W. Skegg, R. .T. Pell, A. Hamilton. The-Mayor congratulated Councillor Pell oil his re-elcction and said that in the past he had been a good councillor, and lie trusted that with his new ideas Councillor i Pell would be as use- ' ful to the borough in the future as he had been in the past. Councillor Pell briefly thanked the Mayor and councillors for their welcome. A deputation of 28 residents and ratepayers, headed by Mr. Fulton, waited upon the council to urge that something should be done for the residents of the Bannatyne Estate, who are obliged to use Beauchamp Street. Mr..Fulton urged that money should be allocated for the formation of the street and the footpaths. 'There were •10 houses, and about 170 residents who deserved some consideration. The side streets were in a bad condition and the approaches to the houses were not made. Furthermore, wandering cattle were a nuisance in the neighbourhood. He urged that the council should, in framing the 1 estimates, make provision for this work, and if possible ■ better lighting should be provided. Several other sneakers voiced" the grievances of the residents, many of whom had put up with the inconvenience of primitive streets for over twelve years. Tbo.Mavor congratulated the deputation on taking an interest in the borough's affairs. He po ; nted out that each year money was allotted for that year though it was not always spent on the street, because where there was a street worse than the. others the money intended for one or more of the other streets was spent'on the street requiring special attention. As to wandering cattle ho was afraid that tho council could do nothing as the owners of cattle had the right lo use the streets at certain hours. "However, lie could'promise that the borough engineer would 'go into the matter and do his utmost for them. The mistake was that a 'previous council did not insist upon the streets being made to their full width and properly channelled. He informed the deputation that they were rated to the limit and it would perhaps he advisable to consider the question of a street improvement loan. The secrctarv of Red Triangle Day wrote asking for the support- of the borough to the appeal for funds, and sugesting that the council should call a public meeting. ' It was pointed out bv Councillor T-Tpiidp' , son tl'nt tho - residents, of the .borough considered themselves as part of the city in such matters, and moved that the letter be received This was carried. !
