By Telegraph-Press Association-Copyright The speculation in the opening event was confined to the flrifc four horses, aiA I right up till the closing time no one could | correctly forecast which horso would be j favourite. At the start Zeus led from 1 Toki and Mareatotara, but tho last-named i was jumping wildly, and her chauceß wero j spoilt... Zeus, when challenged by Toki j at the. six furlongs, soon compounded, and I Toki went on alone. Maretotara put in a good run at the bottom, but another faulty jump* spoilt her chance and Toki won easily. The Summit was a poor third and Zens and Fornic were a long way back. Tho Telegraph Hack Handicap proved a puzzle for backers. Qneen Lizzie v. as fatvourito .with Orawia, who had only ar-! rived from Qiaborno on tho morning of: the race, a closo second favourite. King's ■ Armour showed out for a furlong, when j Queen Lizzie passed him, but immediately i Humorist went up to the iMir'tralian-bred j mare and had shaken her oR os they en-1 tered tho straight. Over ihe last fuiloug j Orawia came fast and T jady Gazeley also put in a challenge, but Humorist held her own and won by a length. Orawia was a neck in front of Queen Lizzie, and Lady i Gazeley was right up in fourth place. I King's Armour was the last to pass the | post. • i
Bagdad was tho only withdrawal frcm the big handicap, leaving eight runnem Trials was favourite with the light-weight Perfidy second in demand. Oroesuß mado tho early running, but ho was in trouble three furlongs from home, where Perfidy got a useful break. She had to be shaken up in the straight to resist a challenge from Trials, who. ><Hi Potentiality, was last at the three Inrlongs. Tho latter pair finished closo together. Dusky Evo was fourth and/ then came Jean Laddo and Crocßus.
All started in the two-year-old Handicap, for which Oratress finished up a better
favourlto than Domagogue. Tho latter was first out from the barrier, and attended by tho favourite, he led the field for two furlongs, when Gipsy Gold ran into second place. At the turn the topweight ran wido und Oratress got up on tho fence, but Demagogue held his own in tho run to tho post, and won by a length from Oratress, with Wawata two lengths away. Pavilion, Manila and Gipsy Gold finished iu that order. Backers, who had been fairly on tho spot up till the High-Weight Handicap, thou received a bad check when tho lit-tle-fancied Haumakaka won from Otara and Mistic' Sarah Grand anil Otara wero the favourites, und the lirst-named led for stofurlongs, where Otara took oliargo. Mistic and Haumakaka put iu strong challenges in the straight and the last-named won nicely, while Mistic finished close up in third place. Mysteriarch waß fourth, and then came Wbukatokt and Almo. A vory hot favourite m Silver aim Mlnck was comfortably beaten by Lilydalo in tho Hack Scurry. Tho.winner was quickest to find its feet, and led the wholo way. The favourlto waß running third at the half journoy, but she finlsoca' on well, and got second place, though she had no chanco with the, winner, Several of tho runners were well fanciod in the open bix furlongs.. Elocution was the actual favourite, whllo thcro wan plenty of money for Bagdad, Rawakore, and Sweet Corn. At tho start Sweet Corn was slow to move and .was last passing the half mile. Here Sea Lord wafl in front of Rawakore with the others bunched. Entering the straight Sea Lord was done with, and Rawakore took charge. Inside the distance Sweet Corn came very fast on tho extreme ontsido and got un in time to win by a half a length. Elocution was third and in a line came Colonade, Vermilion and Impediment. For the concluding event Polynesian and Torchlight divided favouritism, and of the pair the former did the better. At the start Perrier and Sunbrlght showed out, but with two furlongs to go Polynesian took charge. She looked a winner till Queen Lizzie dashed up and easily outpointed her, while backers of the favourite lost second place by a neck. Hylami and Powder King were the next to finish.
