RUSSIAN PRINCE SLAIN
BUTCHERED IN A CASTLE BY PEASANTS. Details of the murder of Pr/ince Sanguszko and visitors to liis castle at Slavuta are published in a Kreff newspaper, a copy of which rented Berne recently. The story is told 'oy an eyetvitness, 31. Brigandage is rampant anci,remains for the most part unpunished. Early in November Prince was walking from his castle at ftlavuta to the village church. Ou his way an officer warned him not ''to return to the castle. A prief/b also gave a _ similar warning. Nevertheless the prince retut ned, but immediately he re-entered the castle was surrounded by soldiers. Among the victors were Count Rzyszoevsky and his sister. Seeing them at a window, the soldiers fired pointj blank at tho'm and the count was wounded. So'ldiers then broke into the i castle and found the count bleeding, j but left him to die. They then shot j his sister -and mutilated her body with j their bayor.ets. Rushing wildly from ! room to room, they found Trince Sanj guezko a,i»d dragged him into the open, where, Fwrrounded by soldiers, he was I driven r/aund and round the path i w'rile 'ni.s persecutors beat him with j flie butt-ends of their rifles, kicked i bim with their heavy boots, and I prodctod him with their bayonets. At 1 last, overcome by fatigue, the prince sank exhausted to the ground. At this, 'moment ono of the soldiors thrust his 'bayonet into the prince's face, rorAnng a horrible gash. The pnnce roflo, but.immediately received bayonet tl.Vrusts in different parts of his body. Imughing and blaspheming, the soldiers '•/irricd his body to one of the stables Wild pitched it npon a heap of straw. Then the pillaging continued. The ' contents of the castle were stolen or 1 burned. The soldiers, carried away /. bv their blood-lust, killed all the splen- ' did Arabian horses in the princes stables.'* .
