THE TURF
NOTES AND COMMENTS fBY GLENCOE.I Blended, who figures in the Maiden Plato at Dannovirlte to-day, will be remembered as a member of Jones's team, which visited Randwiok in the spring. The All Black filly developed wayward tendencies in Sydney, and could not face the starter. Under the circumstances there is little cause to anticipate that she will carry much coin of the .realm at the hands of backers to,day. Katmandu may be troubled by tho length, of the journey, but Galore is well seasoned, and if she draws a good marble may lis well up at the finish. In the President's Handicap, Black Ada, who has run several good races lately, has only to start to be a very strong order. Okiwai is not at Ills best on tho tap of tho ground, and the distance may trouble Shiela. Two of the light-weights, Heather and Jean Laddo, would be better suited were they ablo to command the services of stronger horsemen.
Idyllic.heads the handicap in the Hack Welter Handicap, but ho has been racing badly for spmo time past. The field contains All Over and Engari, both winners at Wanganui. Each will have to carry a ton pound penalty. The Hastings-trained Retard showed a lot of pace when leading tho field down tho back stretch at Wanganui on Saturday last. • Sunbright, who will make his first appearance in T. Quinlivan's colours, has so far shown no form, but ho is a good-looking horse, and age may do a lot for him. The Dannevirko Cup has not drawn a very high-class field, but probably eight will go to the post. The best fancied may bo the Hastings-trained Perfidy, who is at present galloping at tho top of her form. Maraetotara is a likely one, and should get tho distance well. Silver TonEUfi will appear for the first time in his new owner's colours, but his form as a three-year-old has not been of an encouraging nature Several horse's engaged in tho Maiden Plate also claim engagements in the six furlong hack race, rnd backers will have to await tho decision of the earlier race before making their selections for tho second ovent. •
In tho Jumpers' Flat Race, Prince Delawaro is called upon to concede Colorado 81b. The task looks to bo beyond tho Trentham horse.
All Over and Elevate Tead as well as anything in tho. Makirikiri Handicap, in which Dusky Eve has Incurred a penalty, and may not start. Mr. W. M'A. Duncan headed tho list of winning owners at tho Wanganui Meeting, liis cheque amounting to £1160. Mr. G. L. Stead camo next with £520.
There will bo racing at Rotorua to-day. The Cup has drawn an acceptance of seven horses. Tinopai is giving Sir Ralph, runner-up to her at Te Kuiti and Hamilton, 311b. Tho fields on tho whole aro very fair.
B. Deoley was tho most successful rider at tho Wanganui Meeting, piloting three winners and dead-heating once. 0. Price had his right leg badly bruised through Dingle accidentally rolling on to iis mount (Client) a quarter of a mile from homo, in the Wanganui Stakes. The injury was not serious, but it kept tho Fordell horseman out of tho saddle for the rest of the day. An ox-New Zealander in New York won the Stanley Steeplechase, carrying 12st. lib. to victory at the V.A.T.O. .'.leeting on Saturday. New York has done fairly well since ho cross the Tasman.
Estland has credited Mr. T. H. Lowry with £3535 this season. His record reads very well, as out of seven starts he has won five times and been placed second twice.
Mi'. D. H. Roberts has oivon tho Riccarton trainer, P. Christmas, to get ready for racing a two-year-old sister to Fiery Gross from Red Oross by Son of a Gun—Oaritas, and a four-year-old gelding by Glenapp from an unnamed sister to Tangaroa, by Bon of a Gnu—Sally, by Stepniak—Sortie. Mr. Prank Ormond has made arrangements with V. 11. Oollelo to train the two three-year-old fillies, Hymarty, by Ifynicttus (imp.)—Marty (imp.), nnd Birklet, by Birkenhead—Gamelct, which were bought by Mr, Ormond at the recent Karamu sale. The two youngsters will probably go into Collelo's stable this week.
Tho Southland trainer, P. Hogan, has engaged the Auckland Cup winner, Balboa, in a couple of races at the Gore Club's Summer Meeting. Tho Lowry cast-off has .iuet done a season at stud, and, should he be able to stand a preparation, ho may win a race or two. It will be remembered that Balboa beat two very goodliorscs in First Glance and Reputation in tho 0.J.0. Derby of 1914. Spectators said at the time that the son of Vareo—Nerve c-nly won tho race on his gameness and pluck, there having been a lot of bumping in the straight.
Mr. J. B. Reid, of the- Elderslie Stud. rocently sold privately two yearling colts to a well-known Melbourne racing man, both youngsters being descendants of Kilbroney from Rouge and I'osyth (Charlemagne ll—Aiisa) respectively.
A Press Association message from Melbourne states that there are thirty-two acceptors for the Newmarket Handicap.
