BOWLING

CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS SINGLES

WINS FOR HATAITAI AND KELBURN Under distinctly unsatisfactory conditions a start was made with the "champion of champions" singles tourney on tho Hataitai Club's green yesterday afternoon. A howling northerly gale blew furiously throughout the afternoon from a variety of angles, making it exceedingly difficult to judge either green or strength. At times one coidd see that a fair green was taken, but a squall would arrive and force the bowl to nra clean against the bias and finish yards away from the jack. On other occasions a player would allow . for the wind, and the non-arrival of the gust would see the bowl travelling I right across the green to the vicinity !of the jack in the next rink. Two games m the.first round were to have been played, but owing to Te Hiwi's representatives failing to show up Gray, of Kelburn, won by default. The other game was between Young, of Hataitai, and Paul, of Seatoun, which was won by the former by 24—19 after what was not a had game at all in the circumstances. On tho thirteenth head Young had drawn ahead '(18—12), hut .three heads later Paul had pulled up level (18 all). Young managed to push a couple of bowls nearer the jack on tho eighteenth head. Paul scored a single in the next head (20—19), and on the twentieth head Young ended the gamo by getting all four bowls into scoring positions. Tho tournament will be continued today at 9 a.m., on the Hataitai Club's ! green. If the gale does not abate there ! will be some reputations going a-beg-I ging. The draw for to-day's play appeared in yesterday's Dominion. ' THE ROTORUA TOURNAMENT.
