RECREATION IN MILITARY HOSPITALS

As illustrating tho varied kinds of occupation devised to keep the convalescent men and the men confined to bed with serious injuries for long periods from feeling tho monotony of their tedious recovery, the following programme is of much interest, states "Kai. No. 2 New Zealand General Hospital, 'A grand display of work and novelties, the bona-iide work of the patients and staff, will be held on Wednesday, November 15, 1917, in the Recreation Room, Mount Felix. Numerous prizes will be given under 'tho following schedule :— 1.- Fancy Work, (a) First piece of ' work' done' by any' man; (b) best regimental badge; (e) best piece of fancy work; (d) one hand, best piece of work with right hand: (e) one hand, best piece of work with left hand; (f) interward competition, best collodion of work. 2. Basket Work, (a) The best made basket; (b) tho best made basket, first attempt. 3. Painting. On any material. (A table in the Church Hut will be provided for competitors to work at.) 4. Hospital Caricatures. Any person, by any artist. 5. Topical Poems or Limericks. By budding poets! The best three to be read out at the prize-giving. 6. Tho best carved pipe. 7 The. best carved stick. 8. The best string bag, made by the blind. 9. The best piece of cross stitch work. 10. The best original piece of work, of any sort or kind, such as paper flowers, carved. bono or fruit stones, coconuts, or cork, etc. i 11. The best .eight original amateur photographs, to illustrate hospital life. (1) For patients; (2) for hospital staff. All groups must he the sole work of the and mounted on one card. _ . 12. A collection of three original Christmas. cards (subject and. method at the., competitor's choice). 13. Themost novel mechanical model or toy. Note.—The competition under all headings is .open to all the patients. The following items in the schedule are open also to all the hospital staff: Nos. 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, and 12, to whom special prizes will be allotted. At 6.30 p.m. a grand entertainment, consisting of a screaming sketch, wonderfully acted, by members of the hospital—absolutely their first and last appearance on . any stage—entitled, "The Rest Cure."- Presentation of prizes to successful competitors will take place after the entertainment. The commanding officer, Lieutenant-Colonel T. Mill, has kindly consented to 'give away the prizes. "God Save the King." Miss Sheila O'Neill. Miss O'Neill is the first lady to be appointed deputy-assistant inspector of gun ammunition at Woolwich: She lias acquired this position by long work and experience in munition and shell-filling factories, and is recognised as an expert .in the detection of "duds" in T. tubes.
