At the annual conference of tho Newspaper Proprietors' Association of New Zealand yesterday, it was resolved: —"That the members of this association in annual meeting assembled desire to place on record tneir deepest sympathy with the relatives of the lato Mr. W. Gothard, Mr. D. Gardner, Mr. William Lane, and. Mr. Leslie Brett."

Many will regret to learn of the serious illness in Auckland of Mr. William Pryor, secretary of the New Zealand Employers' Federation. Mr. Pryor left for Auckland a couple of weeks ago to relieve Mr. A. E. Wright, the local secretary of the Employers Association, who has been ill for some months past. On Thursday evening last, Mr. Pryor was taken .suddenly ill, and it was found that it was imperative that ho should be operated upon at once for appendicitis. The operation took place at a private hospital the same night. It was successful, and Mr. Pryor was, at latest advices, making a good recovery.

A Press Association telegram from Dunediu states that the death occurred at' Port Chalmers yesterday of Mrs. M. M. MacPhail, Assistant Professor of Modern Languages at tho Victoria University Collagfc. Wellington.

Mr. Harold Gregson, tho Auckland prganist, is visiting Wellington for hoalth-rocruiting purposes., Owing to an accident sustained on tho Main Trunk 1 railway, some months ago, ho had recently to undergo an operation for the removal of his right thumb nail, which has, naturally, interfered a good deal with his work.

Lance-Corporal Lionel J. Carmine, formerly on tho Gisborno etaff of the Bank of New Zealand and son of Mr. L. J. Carmine, recently of Gisborne, but now of Napier, was gassed 'in France on February 6. Another son, Roy, who is a wireless operator in tho Pacific merchant eervice, is recovering from a serious operation at the University Hospital, San Francisco. Mr. I. Hart leaves for Australia shortly on a business aud pleasure trip.
