MAGISTRATE'S COURT
■ POLICE AND MAINTENANCE CASES. Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. A youth named Alexander John Bramley, for whom Mr. T. H. Gil! appeared, was charged with tho theft on February 21 of a postal packet containing a cheque for £2 55., and on Februaiy 23 theft of a packet containing £3, the property of the Postmaster-General. On the application of Detective-Ser-geant Cox a. remand for a week was granted, and bail was fixed at £25and ono surety of £25.
. Thomas . Carroll, who on Saturday consumed more liquor than was good for him, became very bellicose in .Tory. Street, and wanted to light anyone linally attacking a soldier. He wascharged with using.threatening behaviour, whereby a breach of the peace was occasioned, and was convicted and fined 605., in. default twenty-one days' iiiiprisonmen't'.
For insobriety three first offenders were each fined 205., in default fortyeight hours' imprisonment. Elizabeth Mary Wilson, against whom there was one previous conviction, was fined 2us., with tho option of seven days' imprisonment, and James Daniel Wilson, against whom there wero two previous convictions, was lined 605., the alternativo being twenty-one days' imprisonment. MAINTENANCE CASES. Agnes Robertson applied for the remittance of arrears due under a maintenance order for the support of four children.' There being no opposition, the application was granted.
William Garthgate White, who was in arrears to the amount of £2 7s. 6d. in respect to a maintenance order, was convicted and sentenced to twenty-one days' imprisonment, no warrant to be issued unless applied for by complainant. Thomas Montgomery pleaded, guilty to being in arrears to the amount of £5 on a maintenance order in favour of his wife, and was sentenced to .one month's imprisonment, warrant to bo suspended until applied for by complainant. An application for the variation of a maintenance order was made bj Charles Riddick, and the Magistrate, after hearing evidence, made an ordei that the payments should be 7s. 6d. per week for tho future. . AFFILIATION CASE. Several hours were takeii up in the hearing of an affiliation case, in which Ethel Powell, (for,whom Mr. W. F. Ward appeared, instructed by the Charitable Aid Board) proceeded against Thomas M'Guire, represented by Mr. P. W. Jackson. After. hearing the evidence, tho Magistrate decided tltnt-j the defendant was the putative father of tho complainant's unborn child, and defendant was ordered to pay costs 425., and oxpenses of witnesses, and was ordered to enter into a bond of £250 and two sureties of £125 each. In the event of an appeal security was fixed at £20. The court was cleared during the hearing of the case.
