MAGISTRATE'S COURT

POLICE AND BY-LAW CASES. Mr. S. E. Ht'Carthy, S.M., presided over a sitting of the. Magistrate's Court yesterday, and dealt with the police cases. For insobriety Wo first offenders wcre x each fined 10s., in default 24 hours' imprisonment. For Sunday trading N. B. Austin, W. Collins (two charges), F. Clewer (two charges), Harry Davis (two charges), R. Ginsberg" (two charges), W. R. Gates (two charges), G. A. Jorgensen (two ; charges), Frederick Lange, A. Russell (two charges), H. G. Webb, Elizabeth. Mary Nind, and Charles Orounsell were each fined 20s. and costs on each charge. A. L. M. Duff ivas convicted and fined £5 and costs for commencing to construct a building without first having obtained a permit. For leaving his car unattended in Oourtenay Place for three hours, R. Collins was fined 10s. and costs, 17s. 6d. Frederick "\V. Myers, for allowing 1 stock' to wander, was fined £1 and costs. J. B. Moody was fined 10s. and costs for not having lights on his motor-car. For refusing to move his barrow, John.Millanta, a hawker, was fined 30s. and costs. Georgo Adams, who said he had acted in ignorance, was convicted and discharged for unlawfully disconnecting a gaspipo. For hosing their gardens without having a water meter, Herman Otto Mans, of Brooklyn, Louis Sievers, and John R. Stansell were eacli fined 10s. and costs 17s. 6d. For failing to attend drill, F. Johnson was fined 20s. and costs, in default 14 days' military detention; IT. G. Proudfoot, W„ Pone, and T. C. Pearce were each fined 405., and costs,' with the alternative of 21 days' military detention ; R. Grimmct was convicted . and discharged: and the case of A. Jenkins was adjourned for a week for further inmiiries. Mr. F. Holdsworth, who appeared for Jonkins. said the lad's father had been killed at the front,' and the boy was the breadwinner for the family. He worked overtime to secure money to take his mother away for a holiday, and while on holiday'the notice to attend drill was delivered at the home.
