r FIERCE GALE IN THE NORTH. By Telegraph—Press" Association. Auckland, February 15. ' A fierce easterly gale last night, accompanied' by heavy rain, 'caused coastal shipping to remain'in shelter. There were exceptionally high tides in the harbour, jetties which are normally 7ft. above water being only 18in. clear, while the lower parts of some jetties were submerged. ' Some' small craft wore damaged. The yaoht Alex floated on to the beach at Devonport, and her mast struck an electric light cable, causing a short-circuit. The borough was in darkness for an hour. STORM RAGING AT OPOTIKI.

A storm of exceptional severity is raging on the coast, accompanied by tides of 'record height; The sea covered parts of'the roads between Opotiki and Ohiwa, washing up logs ana obstructing the traffic., Severals yards of the right bank of the Ohiwa Harbour, used for .traffic to the wharf, were washed s'%j- The steamers Ngatiawa and Tai! an': are sheltering high up in Ohiwa Labour. •
