Sir William Eraser, Minister of Public Works, left for 'Auckland yesterday. Ha intends to visit the North Auckland district, and he will be absent from Auckland for some tun days. Mr. James Jordan has been appointed Clerk of the Magistrate's Court at New Plymouth, Sheriff for the Taranaki district and Deputy-Registrar of tho Supremo Court. The Royal Humane Society's 6ilver medal and certificate has been presented to Mr. Alfred R. Huggins, of Devonport, in recognition of his bravery in rescuing Mr. Robert Wray from drowning in Auckland Harbour on May 19 last. 'Hie funeral of the late Mr. E. Balcombe Brown took place yesterday afternoon, and was very largely attended. Among those who paid a last tribute of respect were the Hon. Sil Francis Bell, tho Chief Justice (Sit Robert Stout), tho Mayor and Mayoress (Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Luke), tlie ohainoan of tho Bank of New Zealand (Mr. ]-I. Bcauchamp), members of the Wellington Diocesan Synod, the chairman and directors of the Equitable Building and Investment Company, tho president and directors of the Y.M.C.A., and representatives of the Wellington Gas Company, 'fho late Mr. Brown was for many years a director of tlio Equitable Company, an ex-president of tho Y.M.C.A., and at the time of his death was a trustee and member of the latter institution's advisory board, and ho also actcd in a legal capacity for the Gas Company. The cortege left the residence of Mr. C. H. Izard, Golder's Hill, and the coffin was taken into' St. Paul's proCathedral, wliere a service was conducted by the Bishop of Wellington, Archdeacon Fancourt, the Rev. A. M. Johnson, and the Rev. G. N. Turner. The interment was made in the family vault in tho Karori Cemetery.

Mr. J. H. Wood, of Wellington, has, says a Press Association telegram, been, appointed manager of the Christchurch abattoirs.

Mr. Duncan M'Ewan King, of "The Bend," Winton, a well-known farmer, while engaged in setting up somo etooks on his Dacre property on Friday fell acrosa one ol ; them and died. The' late Mr. King, who was 60 years of ago, was born at Ardocli, Perthshire, and went to Southland over 40 years ago, soon afterwards taking up a property at Woodlands, and in 1888 purchased a 150-acre block near. Mr. Ned Perry, of Manners Street, lias been advised that his brother, Private John Perry, who enlisted from Port Chalmers, and went forward with the Second Reinforcements, has died of' wounds. He saw action, and was wounded at Gallipoli, and returned to New Zealand. Oil being discharged ho entered tho employ of the Wellington Gas Company, but enlisted once more, and went away with the Eighteenth Reinforcements, was twice wounded in actions in France, and on returning to the front for the fourth time receaved bis death wound. The deceased was a single man. Mr. A. J. 5L Graham has been appointed a member of the Palmerston Liconsing Committee. Mr. Frederick William Hart has been appointed registrar of elector-! and returning officer for the Ytanganm district. He will also be Clerk of tho Magistrate's Court at Wanganui, and Sheriff for Wanganui aivl Rangitikci. The Hon. Geo. Fowlds and Mr. Geo. H Wilson, of Auckland, members of the National Executive of theY.M.C.A., left for Christchurch last; night to attend the Red Cross Confer-> ence ill that city.
