THE CALIFORNIAN THISTLE

■'; The Califomian thistle appears to lliave taken a strong hold in the East /JSyreton and Ohoka districts, says the 'Christchurch "Sun." It is growing on 'the roadside, in the fences, and everywhere, and in most cases is now in flower. Unless prompt measures are taken the seed will ripen and a further extension of the mischief result. A-Halswell farmer states that he has always found agricultural salts effective in killing the weed. He ploughs about 3 inches deep and spreads the salts in the furrows over the exposed cut roots. Previous to doing this, he cleared a 25-acre area in a season by continuous cultivation, ploughing four times and keeping the cultivator going whenever weather permitted. The roots were seldom left for more than a few days at a time.
