February 1, 5.5 x p.m.) Paris, January 31. In bright moonlight, the Gothas, on arrival at 11.45 p.m., weremet by an intense gun-fire. A French official report states: "Four enemy air squadrons crossed to the north of Compeigne, (lying very high owing to tlio clearness of tlic atmosphere, and approached Paris from the i north-east. Tliey successfully bombtKl several suburbs, then flew over Pafis, chiefly to the right' of the Seine, where they dropped almost all their bombs in a few moments. About twenty people were killed and fifty injured, including numerous women and .children. Two hospitals were hit, and several buildings burned or damaged. A German official report states: — "As a reprisal for the bombing of German open towns, our aviators threw fourteen tons of bombs into Paris in the first systematic air attack we have made on that city."—Aus.-N.Z.
