SCOTTISH WOMEN'S HOSPITAL FUND
FURTHER DONATIONS. The following additional donations have been received by the hon. treasurers of the Scottish Women's Hospitals for War Service Fund:—
Total £593 11 6 A remittance of £500 has been cabled through the Minister of Internal Affairs to the High Commissioner in London, to be paid over to the headquarters of the fund' in Edinburgh. The following letter, signed by J. 0. Fairfax, chairman of the' New South Wales Executive of the British R«d Cross Society, appeared in Sydney daily papers of December 17 "I am authorised by the executive of the New South Wales Division of ■the Australian branch of tho British Red Cross Society to state shortly the relations of our society to the Scottish Women's Hospitals for War Service. Let me say at once tkat our feelings are of the most cordial sympathy and support. Where tho two organisations are working in the same sphere of action they have helped ono another by the friendly interchange of- supplies and ! scrvicßs, "The Scottish Women's Hospitals seeni to have taken a pride in choosing the most difficult fields in wluch to work. In succouring the stricken Serbs, in hastening to the relief of the routed Rumanians, they undertook the most dangerous and difficult work in the very worst surroundings. ' The valour and heroism of the Scottish women is a fitting complement to the deeds of the famous Scottish regiments. . "Sir Charles Mackellar, at a recent meeting" in the Highland Society s ■rooms, said that tho Scotch were not a. military race, but he thanked God that tliev were a warlike one. "The, Scottish Women's Hospitals aro not military hospitals, but the wounded on many a stricken field have had cause to thank God that they are 'for war service.' , "We havo heard many times of the happy and cordial feelings that exist between our own men and the Scottish regiments. The New South Wales will do honour to both by making a generous response to the appeal for subscriptions to help carry on the splendid work of the Scottish Women's Hospitals."
The Camp Commandant at Featherston acknowledges with thanks the gilt from Mesdames Bey and Bunny and Messrs. Tilson and Skeet of fruit, which has been distributed to;."'the troops at Papawai Camp. Tho. sudden death of Mother Mary Sebastian, an esteemed member of the Religious Community at Nelson Convent, occurred in Nelson on Wednesday afternoon. Tho rev.' mother was seized with a fainting fit in tho street, and died before medical aid could be obtained. When she left tho convent she was well and cheerful. Mother Mary Sebastian, who was born in Canterbury, left Nelson twenty years ago,' after teaching there for about eight years. She returned about a year ago, and since then had been a teacher in the Catholic Parochial School.
