HOW GERMANY PLANNED THE WAR
"SQUARING" THE COMMERCIAL MAGNATES ONE WHO REFUSED WAS RUINED New York, January 22. The New York "World" prints a supposed article from a Berlin paper, in which a former commercial magnate, August Thyssen, states that many Germane in 1912 were asked to support a Hohenzollern policy of war, and were offered rich rewards. "The Hohenzollerns said that war had become a necessity for the preservation of the military system," ho says. "They offered mo a grant of 30,000 acres of land in Australia and a loan of 750,000 dollar* (£150,000) to develop the land. firms were promised special facilities in India, and a syndicate was formed for tho exploitation of Canada. It was calculated that Germany would conquer Australia, India, and Canada by the end of 1915. Tho promises were mado by Herr von Beth-mann-Holhveg and confirmed by the Kaiser. When I was asked to guarantee a million dollars for the war loan in 1916, I declined, whereupon my war contracts wero cancelled and my business ruined."—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
