NOTES AND COMMENTS
fBY GMNCOE.I A final reminder is given those concerned that entries for the Pahiatua meeting close to-night at 9 o'clock. Acceptances ■ for the first day's handicaps at Wellington meeting cloee on Monday next.
Demoß, winner of the Juvenile Handicap at Marton, is engaged at Wciiington next. week. Those who saw him score at Marton predict a good future for Mr. E. Short's colt. Ho ie out of Jeanno d'Arc, who so far has not thrown a bad one. Tho owner of Demos thinks very highly of tho colt, and as a yearling ho rofueed 6CO guineas for him. Henelauß ie spoken of as an unlikely starter in the Wellington Cup. The Messrs. Biddiford have also Johnny Walker and Mascot enga-jjed in tho race, but the form of the latter has been so poor of late that eho would be more at homo in tho Welter, so probably Johnny Walker will be the stable representative in the Oup. There is a doubt about Teka starting in tho Wellington Oup, a* he hae boen nominated. at tho Takapuna. fixture, run tho week following. Oynic is also entered at both places, but the Trentham course will euit him a lot better than Takapuna, and ho can be expected to raco at the Wellington meeting. By no stretch of Imagination could the hacks engaged at the coming Wellington fixture bo termed a good lot. In this respect they aro no worse-than the lot that did duty at tho holiday meetings. Thoughtful and Thames, who are at the head of the handicaps at Trentham, have been racing a long timo in hack class, and as they aro at the top of the handicap, tho suggestion that tho others aro moderate seems borno out. 0. Emerson hastened to the West Ooaet at the conclusion of the Auckland Cup meeting and arriving in time for tho concluding day at GreyiEouth. he managed to ride three winners, There is a great diversity of opinion amongst iportmg men as to whether Hymcstra can stay over a journey. Most people argue to the contrary, probably because his sire was a better horse over a ehort course than ever a middle distance. Hymestra's new owner will not have to try him over middle distances, as there are plenty of weight-for-age races over ehort courses to keop him busy, and while he can piolt up the/e there is nc need for him to be bumping up against the likes of Estland.
Until tho accqptancen are made known next week thcr.e will bo little chance of knowing tho likely starters in the big race at Trentham, as no Ichs than thirteen of those weighted ars also engaged in other events run on the same day.
The Golfer is only engaged on the opening day of the Wellington mcetinj;. Hci3 in tho Hack Hurdles at Foxton on January 22.
While at the post for the Oaraaru Cup Tlattle Eve received a, kick from Winter Cherry, which left him lame, and ho ie now running out in tho paddock.
Tho ex-Taranaki horseman, 0. M'Arten, who got leave from the military authorities during the Christmas meetings, had several mounts at the New Plymouth' and Stratford meetings, and rode Dingle to victory in the Hack Welter at the former gathering. ■
