Jinißon was proud of his \imbrella. It was a beauty. But he was haunted by the dread N that it would bo stolen. So, when ho went to stop at a hotel, he labelled it thus: —"This umbrella belongs to the champion boxer of England. •Coming back in five minutes." When he did come back, however, there was no umbrella; only another notice, which ran: "The umbrella lias been taken by the champion runner- of England, and he's never coining back." -
Some.time ago, when a local corps was' reviewed by Sir lan Hamilton, ouc officer was mounted on a horse that had previously distinguished itself in a bakery business.. Somebody recognised the horse and shouted, "Baker!" Tho horse promptly stopped dead, and nothing could urge it on. The situation was getting painful when the officer was struck with a brilliant idea, and remarked, "Not to-day, thauk you." Tho procession then moved on.
M. Gaston dp Leval, in a lecture delivered on the anniversary of Miss Cavell's death, said that a message was sent from German headquarters to the prison where Edith Cavell was confined, on October 11, that the sentence on Nurse Cavell would be carried out at 2 o'clock in the morning—instead of 7 a.m. as was at first intended—and Nurse Cavell was allowed to see the English priest. Miss Cavell wrote out a oheque for her mother: "To my mother," and signed it, "Edith 'Oavell, she was shot." Just before the end slie wrote in her Biblo: "Died 7 o'clock, October 12. With love to my mother. Edith Cavell." .She died standing before her enemies, Btraighb of carriage and straight of eye, fearloss, to the very last.
