DRUGGED AND ROBBED

A POISONED CIGARETTE.

At tho London Central Criminal Court recently, before Judge AtherleyJones, the trial was concluded'of Elias Weinstoin, a jeweller, upon the charge of stealing f,roin one Hyman Dragelof Jacob-son fourteen 1000-franc notes. The jury found the prisoner guilty, and Judg'o Atherley-Joiies sentenced him to 1C months' imprisonment with hard labour.

The case for the prosecution was that the prisoner suggested to Mr. Jacobson, a watchmaker, that he should invest money in the purchase and sale of French notes. On May 30 Jacobson purchased fourteen 1000-frauc notes at a foreign exchange. The prisoner went to Mr. Jacobson's shop on tho night of the purchaso, and the prosecutor showed him the 14 notes. After oxaming them the prisoner returned themto Jacobson,. saying they wero quite right, '■ and the prosecutor put ■ wem into his hip pocket/ Tho prisoner offered him a cigarette. After smoking part of it Mr. Jacobson said ho folt his head "going funny." The prisoner replied that it was a good cigarette. Mr. Jacobson became unconscious, and on coming to himself again he told tho prisoner, who was standing'by the table, that it was getting late, and that ho must, close,the shop for tho night. After the-prisoner had gono Mr. Jacobson found that tho 14 noteß had been taken out of his pocket. The police arrested the prisoner on i July 13 on the roof of a house in Marylebone, where he resided.

In passing sentence on the prisoner the Judge observed that the caso savoured more of fiction in a monthly magazine that of ordinary lifo.
