FOR SHIRKING RESERVISTS
COMPULSORY HOME SERVICE. Comment has been made. during recent weeks' on the caso of a reservist who evaded service for some time after being drawn in the ballot, was finalh arrested, sentenced to a short term oi imprisonment and-ordered to be handed, over to the military authorities on release, and who was guickly at large again on leavo witliouvpay. The explanation,, according to the •recruiting authorities, is that tho man*proved unfit for any service whatever. The authorities would havo no objection to his term of imprisonment being longer: ,But they could find no.use for him in camp,.'and so had perforce to let him go. ■ .:.;. v ".; The rule is that if a man has evaded or : neglected his duty, as a reservist, he is sont into camp as soon as the ■ authorities can' Jay hands on him.' He is medically and if found to be-fit is put into.training. If ho is fit for homo service,' but .not for active service, ho is retained compulsorily for home being assigned any duty that the Camp Commandant-thinks desirable. But if the reservist is reported by the medical s officers" to Tie unfit' ;for any service whatever, then he must be released. He would be merely a nuisance and an expense in camp.
