CHEAPER MEAT
STATEMENT 13Y THE PRIME MINISTER.
The scope of the Government's scheme for the supply of. meat from tho Imperial stocks held m the cold stores seems likely to.be extended considerably by the new arrangements that have come into operatioij. Centres that did not, take this meat last year are disposed now to move in the mattC"Anv centre that is within reach of freezing works may take advantage of the scheme if it finds that the meat obtained in the ordinary way is too dear," said the Primo Minister yesterday. "The condition is that the retailers who receive the meat from the stores at tlio scheduled prices do not chargo the consumers higher prices/than are approved by the Board of Trade. The scheme offers a prospect of a reduction in the retail prices in some centres. There are other places, Wellington among them, where meat drawn 'from the cold stores is already available at prices as low as the consumer could expect to pay under tlio Government scheme." Mr. Massey mentioned that one application for meat had como from a southern township, where the sole rotail butcher had been called up for military, service. The people concerned had been told tliatcthey could have meat uuder the Government scheme.
