ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
DEATH OF A SOLDIER. An inquest was held yesterday morning by Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., concerning tho death of Private Charles M'Roberts, Trentham Details, who died suddenly at the Red Light BoardInghouse, 42 Ghuznco Street, on Monday morning. Dr. Gilmer, who made the postmortem examination, stated that the body was well nourished, and there were 110 marks of violence. The heart was very f&tty } showing evidence of valvular disease; the lungs were congested, and showed evidence of pneumonia. The liver and kidneys were enlarged, and the stomach was empty, giving evidence of gastritis. The doctor was of opinion that the cause of death was heart failure. Constable F. E. Mitchell, who was called in and ha<J the body removed to the morgue, stated that on searching the clothes of tho deceased, lie found a Trentham Camp pass in the name of Charles M'Roberts, tuna m which leave was granted until Jnnuary 7. , At this stage tho mquesc. was adjourned to Saturday morning for further evidence to bo taken.
OAMARU BEACH FATALITY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Oamaru, January 2. At the inquest 011 tho lad Brown, of Christchurch, who was drowned at Oamaru beach yesterday, tlio evidence showed that the two Motcalf cluldrcn displayed commondablo pluck in attempting tlio rescue. A verdict of death by accidental drowning was returned. I
