THE HOLIDAYS
As is usual in AVellington there are not many set attractions for holidaymakers in the city during the Christmas holidays, but given fine weather people in Wellington are never backward at making their own fun. There are always the ocean beaches accessible by train, and Day's Bay and Muritai offer inducements to tlioso who like to mediate boside the blue waters of the harbour. There will be Roman Catholic picnics at Father Lane's grounds at tho Lower Hutt.a nd also at Karori, on Boxing Day. On that day, too, the annual tournament of tho Wellington. Bowling; Centre will commence on all local greons at _ 9.30 a.m. To those who .lige th 6 exciting pleasure of horse-racing and all that it entails, thero is tho Manawatu Racing Club's meeting at Awapuni (Palmerslon North), always one of the' most pleasurable of summer meetings. To those who do not caro to travel far from home thero are pleasant grounds and gardens at Newtown Park—also tho Zoo—Central Park, the Botanical Gardens, and Wilton's Bush, whilst tho beaches of tho bays will have their thousands of patrons during the next few days if tho weather bo fine. . Theatrically the event of Christmas, 1917, in Wellington, will be the first appearance in Now Zealand of the brilliant English actress, Miss Marie Tempest, find the almost equally talented actor, Mr. Graham Browne. The opening bill for Wednesday evening will be 'Die Marriage oF Kitty," a comedy all matured playgoers wll remember with pleasure. Especially good pictures have been secured for exhibition at the Empress, .and the King's Theatres, and a vandoville programme of particular merit will he presented at His Majesty's Theatre on Wednesday evening.
