ENGINEERS' AWARD
« COURT DISAPPROVES OF UNION'S ACTION. By Telograpb-Press Association. Dunedin, December 20. In a memorandum to the award m tlie Dunedin branch of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers' dispute, the Arbitration Court says: ''It appeared from the evidence that m February the union became involved in a dispute with the Union Company in respect to certain work on board one of the company's steamers. In consequence of that dispute, with which the ironfounders were in no way concerned, the iinion resoli'ed. that ;ill engineers bo instructed to refuse to work overtime iu any shop in Otago until further notice. The engineers r.ccordingly, up to about the hearing before the Court, refused 1 to work overtimo in any shop in Dunediu, although in some Special cases the engineers agreed to work overtime if tho union would give its consent, which was refused. In the opinion of the Court the action of the union was wholly unjustifiable and unreasonable, and resulted in loss and inconvenience to tne employers. The Court feels bound to mark'its disapproval of the conduct of the union by refusing to continue preference of employment, which members hitherto have enjoyed, llie usual preference clause, therefore, will be omitted from the award."
