NORTH CA TERBURY CROPS
A LARGE YIELD EXPECTED. fiy Telegraph—l'rcss Association. CFhristchurcli, December 14. Reports to hand on the condition of fiEo grain crops in various parts of Nortn Canterbury are generally very satisfactory, and the into rains are expected to "cause considerable improvement. The yield of grain and oats, it is thought, will be much larger than was at first expected, on account of paddocks that were sown for green fend not being required for that imrppse, and tho crops will now bo harvested. There is no business doing w tho grain market. Efforts that were made a few weeks back to establish forward business in the new oats crop have, mot with very little response. The cxpertence of tho past two years ."-hows tliat the consumption of oats' is very much less thai) it was; in fact, this last year there was only about, one half the usual requirements available, ilipugli no doubt the normal consumption would be, more than six million bushels..if.supplies were available and prices reasonable. There is little demand for oatsheaf chaff, on account of the '-difficulty of getting shipping space for Auckland. Old potatoes are now qiiito unsaleable. In the auction rooms they are quoted at 3s. to 4s. per sack.
