UPPER HUTT FLOWER SHOW

SUMMER. BLOOMS. The sixth show of the Upper Hutfc nnd District Horticultural Society uas lipid in the Town Hnll on Thursday. Mrs. T. M. Wilford, who performed the opening ceremony, congratulated the society upon the success that had attended its efforts, as evidenced hv the excellent display of exhibits, which exceeded 600. Special reference was made to the home industries class and the vegetable class, the girls' sections in the former being especially meritorious, the more so in that some of the girls were quite young. Mr. ,T. H. Lynskey, of Peton'e, who judged the drawing and handwriting competition, had much difficulty in awarding the_ prizes, so keen had been the competition. One of the features of the show was wo display of roses made by Mr. T. JVaugh, of Lower Hutfc, who also judged the general classes, and found much to commend in regard to the sweet peas and the cut flowers. Mrs. 0. A. IDwen and Miss Webster judged the' table decorations, floral arrangements, and home industries. Mrs. A. Anderson and Mrs. Ewen had charge of a. patriotic sweets stall, and members of the- local patriotic guild the tejwoom. Mrs._ A. Anderson was the winner of the silver vase presented by Mrs. A. IVarco for the most points gained in the cottage section, nnd Mr. C. H. Izard's prizes for the b'est-lcept cottage garden were won by Mrs. A. Anderson 1, and Mr. ,T. Martin 2. The silver medals presented hv Mr. T. S. Wcston to the gardeners whose emplovers won most points m classes B and I) were won by Mr. H. Johnson, gardener to Mr. C. H. Izard, and by Mr. I. J. Taylor, gardener to Mr. E. G. V. Zohrab.

The principal prize-winners were as follow:—Pot plants, best collection, ii'if variety: Afiss E. Davis, 1; Mrs. Heiford, 2. Other winners were: Mrs. Usher, Mrs. Anderson, Mrs. C. Whiteman. Mrs. A. W. Hogg, and Mr. IT. G. TCirker. Cut flowers (grown in the own): Mr. 0. H. Iznrd. nine firsts: Mr. H.. W. Leppcr. eight firsts and six sworn!?. Mr. C. H. Iwml also \vn" the champion vase for sweet peas, r.nd Mr. H. W. Lcpner the champion rose. Other winners in the class were Miss Oharlosworth and Mrs. 'Fothpnsill. Floral arrangements: F. J. Usher. The thanks of -llie society nre due t<l all who conf.ribiiled to the success of the show. The total proceeds were as follow:—Door takings, £13 65.; patriotic sweets stall, £R 13s. 4d.; sale of flowers, etc., £9 3s. 6d.. It is proposed to vote the balance of proceeds to the wounded soldiers' funds.

For the Now Zealand Volunteer Sisterhood Holiday Fund, Mrs. A. Crawford, hon. secretary of the Mayor's Countess of Liverpool Fund, has received the following amounts:—Lower Hutt Patriotic Guild, £5; Mrs. F. F. Castle, 10s. 6d.; Mrs. Hudson, £1 Is.; Mrs. Massey, 10s.; Christclmrch Lady Liverpool Fund, £75; Raetihi Patriotic Guild, £1 Is. The Wairarapa Liverpool Fund has promised £25. The "breaking-up" for tho Christmas holidays of Miss Francis's kindergarten took place yesterday. In addition to the usual proceedings, a sale of flowers, cakes, sweets, etc., was held, and the sum of £7 12s. 6d. resulted. This amount was handed over to Mrs. Adams (The Terrace), for The Ternice's day at the Wellington Red Cross Shop, to be held in February. This effort, on the part of tjio children was very greatly appreciated by Mrs. Adams and her committeo.
