ECONOMISING IN BENZINE
VALUABLE DISCOVERY
BY A WANGANUI- CHEMIST
To-day the motor is the king of vchiclos; it is handy transport mm tho ideal pleasure conveyance. Tho cheapor tho cost or running tho motor tho more tho peoplo who can onjoy its uso or employ it for husiuess purposes. Beiizino is ail important item in tho list of working espouses, aud anything which economises. in benzine will effecv considerable saving for motorists. A Wanganui chemist, Mr. Andrew .Doig, has experimented with this end iu view for several years, and has produced a commodity which is likoly to become of first importance to motorists. Mr. Doig has used his skill as an analytical chemist in experiments oil motor spirits, and'ho has now placed on tho market a commodity which is known as "Novoko." "Novoko" is a highly -concentrated snythotio bonzino purifier, which produces phenomenal power and velocity. Under ordinary conditions, when korosono or lienziuo is fired in.an engine, combustion is not comploto, and the unburnt carbon is deposited on the piston and other parts. "Novoko" when mixca with benzine' or keroseno produces complete' combustion, and thereby avoids, tho deposit of carbon, thus producing moro .power and a better running engine. For tho comploto combustion of 0110 gallon of puro potrol it requires 1407 cubic foot of- air, .or, in other words, 11,040 volumes of air aro required foi the complete combustion of ono voluni6 of potrol vapour. Tha moro air tlrn ongiuo consumes the greater will be tho power produced: When "Novoko" is added to petrol tho engiuo will take nearly double the above amount of ail per gallon. Honce nearly double the amount of power'will be produced from a given quantity of potrol. As "Novoko" increases tho power 01 kerosene, bonzinc, or motor spirit, an eugino will run on a very much "leaner" mixture. It is therefore essential to out down the jet in tho carburettor as much as possible, and at tho samo time increase tho air._ The' nietliod of using "Novoko' is simplicity itself, being merely tho. pouring of ono ounco (two tablespoonfuls) of"the liquid into every gallon of petroi in tho tank. As, however, full directions aro issued for -its use, wo need not specify them here. The placing of "Novoko" on tho market' has aroused groat interest iu the motor "world, and the N.Z. Fuei Economises, Ltd., the-company, formea to handle "Novoko." have already baa large orders placcd with : thbm. . Exhaustive and severe trials have proveo what it will do, and tliero seoms little doubt tbat it is destined to become-an absolutely necessary item in tho motoi car owner's supplies.. . The company are able ■to produco amplo evidence of ; the value of "Novoko." : They hold a testimonial from Dr.. J. T. \V. Wilkin, of Wanganiii, to tlio-effect , that by using "Novoko" the mileage of his car increased from 14* miles'to 24 miles per gallon. Of special value is tho opinion of Jlr. L. C. Rut-ledge, motor expert, theoretical and practical engineer. Ho writes: —
"At your request I tested a furthei sample of your 'Novoko' in my. 3-Ht.p. motor cycle, and was surprised at the result. The bike was a Crusader, 3speed gear. AVhen'l had the test the ronds wore wot and heavy, and tho results wore as follow.: —On benzine. 83.i. miles per gallon, and on 'Novoko' 116 miles -per gallon; increase, 32.8 miles. As in'the previous test, I noticed a decided improvement in the pulling." ■ One of the best-known men on the coast, Mr. C. H. Chavannes, a- dealei in Ford cars, ' snys thi? of his experience with "Nov.oko" :— "I havo much pleasure in stating tbat I gave my car a trial run a few days ago, first on benzine and then oil 'Novoko.' Tli# car was a new Ford, and very stiff. The 'Novoko' increased the mileage from 24 to 34, an increase of 10 milos per'gallon. 1 was surprised at the result. I sincerely hope you will soon - have it on the market, as I am looking forward to using it as soon as I can procure it. Wishing you every success with your invention." - Mr. E. A. Loughlin, solicitor, of Palmerston North, having tested 'Novoko,' wrote Mr. Doig the following letter:— "I have made two practical trials with your 'Novoko' mixture, and havo pleasure in reporting the following results: — ■ , "The car used was a4-cylinder Buick, single-seater, nominal h.p. 20. On tho first day, over the PalmerstonTokomarn Road, 10 pints of petrol mixed with your commodity made 38.6 miles, at an average speed of 23i miles an hour. The day was a particularly stormy and windy one, and unfavourable to good results. "The next day I ran over the same road. Tho first gallon carried me 29.S miles, at an average speed of-23} miles an hour, and I made seven stops and seven starts in that journey. I then filled tljfi tank with half a gallon of the samo mixture, and ran 14 miles in 30 minutes, which is an average speed of 28 miles an hour, and 28 milos to the gallon. "I consider the above results extremely satisfactory, for tho following reasons:—! selected the Palmerston-Toko-maru Itoad because I am iu tho habit of running over it three or four times a week. It is very hilly, and lam quite familiar with the manner in which my car negotiates the hills. I wanted to find out whether your mixture affected the power in any way. Tho best run I ever made hitherto oil petrol, over that rond, is 22 miles to the gallon, at an average pace of about 23} miles to the hour. I consider tli.it with vour mixture thero is a clear gain of eight miles to the gallon; but f propose to make an actual test with a measured gallon of petrol as soon an 1 can spare the time, when 1 will let you have, the exact result.
"With regard to tho power. I camo to the conclusion that, if anything, my car showed an improvement with your mixture over potrol. ] ran the second test on the half-gallon, in order to tost tho power of the oar. Twenty-eight miles to the hour on that particular road is exceptionally fast 'travelling, aud requires a car to be at lie;- very best iu order to negotiate the hills, as she did, on her top speed. Included in tho run is n very sharp turu known as tho Linton Bond, which very few cars negotiate on Iheir too snood. My 'Diiick' negotiated this hill, bindi"g at tho lop running 20 milos to tho hour, and at the sharpest and steepest bend she was doing 1(1 miles to tho hour."
[Tore is the result of a trial as applied to a milkinc-machine plant:— "This !otl:cr will servo to confirm and certify to the trial hold niftier our supervision last Monday, at Mr. W. Mason linyl.y's house, in ISroad Street, with your 'Novokn.' \Yn Dorsonallv supervised and conducted tlio trial, which was carried out. as follows-Tim plant used was ;i 3-li.p. stationary linn7,ine coupled to a % '| 0 ,|q dynamo, connected up to tlm lip;litinjr set. The feed-tank was disconnected from .tlm enrlinroltor of tlm engine. half-pint of motor spirit .was put jn lt qlass-holfle and conneeted to (he ( ..| r „ linre.ttor by a. rnMmr tuhini;. Tlie enKino was Ket uoimr; and the load piil, on lier was 1 5 to'lli amps,' Tlm rrine stopped for want of fnol Mftrr she lind heon running 15 ininntns 2 seconds. The air and feed were adjusted and half a pint of 'Novoko' was then'
put in tho bottle. Tho load given then was 16 to 17 amps, and tho engino ran for 28 minutes 12 seconds, showing an incrcaso of just ovor 78 per cent, iu 'running time, with tho sanio amount of fuel. AVo were careful to see that every condition was similar in tlio two runs, and aro satisfied to certify thai, overythinf? about, tho trial was carried out in a lair and impartial manner, absolutely under tho control of ourselves, without any inter, fercnco or advieo from any connected or interested in 'Novoko.' " "Novoko" is st-ocked by all garages throughout tho Dominion. All communications rospectinp: "Novoko" should bo addressed to tho Jlnnager, N.Z. Fuel Economisers, Ltd., P.O. liox 59, Wanganui.—(Published by Arrangement.)
