TOWN BELT AND BRICKS
A NEW PROPOSAL. The Reserves Committeo reported to the City Council last evening that they had received a proposal for the granting "of a leaso of a suitable portion of tiio Town Belt with the object of establishing a brick-mafting plant. The committee recommended the council to favourably consider the proposal. Councillor W. 11. Bennett said that bricks had recently riseii in price because the existing brickyards had worked out their supplies of clay. Councillor M. F. Luckie said that one of the important things was that we would get bricks which would last longer than tho bricks now being made. Councillor W. T. Hildreth said tho position regarding building was somewhat critical, and ho thought the idea, a good one if proper safeguards wera taken. Councillor IV. H. P. Barber did not agree with the idea. There were other hills about here, besides the Town Belt, which could be used. If the proposal was agreed to, the* Town Belt would bo disfigured. Councillor L. M'Kenzie also raised objections to the proposal. Councillor R. A. Wright said _ the idea was to assist in tho production of good brinks at a cheap rate. Councillor J. Castle opposed the scheme, which lie described as an attempt by a coterie to secure a portion of the reserve. The Mayor said he did not favourably consider the nroposal. More information was needed, and one of tho things ho wanted to know was what part of the reserve was to be operated 011. The committee's recommendation was defeated by eight votes to seveu.
