Major D. Sweeter, who has taken up tho duties of adjutant (1) at Trentham Camp, came to Now Zealand five years ago, and has had experience in several of the Dominion's • training camps, including the Tunnellors' Camp at Avondale. Ho was assistant infan-' try instructor for some time, and afterwards acted as adjutant at Fcathcrston. Major Sweetoer took part with tho Imperial Forces in the British operations in West Africa in 1897-1899, for' which ho wears tho medal and clasp. For service in South Africa he received the Queen's Medal and clasps, and he was in tho Ashanti campaign in 19011902. Brigadier-General Wallach, of tho Australian Forces, who has been tru a visit to New Zealand has returned to Australia. Dr. J. Allan Thomson and Mr. B. C. Aston have been appointed by tho Governor-General to ho members of ■the Board of Governors of tho NewZealand Institute.
Lieutenant E. G. Bristed, eldest son of Mr. A. H. Bristed, editor of the "Weekly Press" and "Referee," who was killed in action in Franco on December 3, volunteered for the Main Body, but was rejected on account of his youth, and got away with the Fourth Reinforcements, being then just twenty. Ho was two months on Gallipoli, and was wounded at Suvla Bay, and since his recovery had served in France, being promoted to com* missioned rank on tho field. Lieutenant Bristed was farmingin tho Gis* borne district when he enlisted. Ha has two brothers in the service of tho Eastern Extension Company in Wellington.
' ' Lance-Corporal Hugh Decimus Bridge, killed in action, was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Bridge, of Oriental Bay. LanceCorporal Bridge . (formerly company sergeant-major, Seventeenth Reinforcements), of B Company, 3rd Battalion, Rifle Brigade, was' 27 years of age, and leaves a wifo and one child. Ha was born in Wellington, and was educated at the Roseneath and the Tor-' race Schools. Ho was a well-known athlete, being a member of the Wellington Football Club, the Star Boating Club, and a member of the D Battery. He was also an enthusiastic member of the Amateur Operatic Society. He had been in tho firing-line for eighteen mouths and saw a groat deal of fighting. Three of Lance-Cornoral Bridge's brothers have been at the front. _ and 0110 (Lance) was killed at Gallipoli. Another brother, Lieutenant C. E. Bridge, is now on his way back to New Zealand. Still another brother, Lieutenant 1). Bridge, has Wen in charge of records at Trentham since tho outbreak of war. News was received yesterday by Mr. and Mrs. A. Levy, of this city, of tho death of their son, Sergeant-Major Edward (Ted) Levy, who was killed m action in France. The deceased soldier was very well-known in tho' city, and tho news of his death will be received with general regret. Sergoant-Major. Levy was educated at Wellington College, and had a great liamei in swimming circles, besides being extremely popular in all other branches of sport. Tho deceased soldier, who was 27 years of age, .left New Zealand with the Twenty-fourth ' Reinforcements, and had been only a few days in action in France when he was killed. Just before going to tho front, Sergeant-Major Lovy met his brother, after twelve years, Captain Louis Levy, R.A.M.C., in Edinburgh, who was on leave. The latter has been stationed at a casualty clearing station since tho outbreak of war. Tho brothers had only one day together before Sergeant-Major Levy left for tho front, meeting his death a, few days later. Sympathy was expressed by tho City Council last evening with Mr. James Ames (City Valuer) in the loss of his brother. Tho City Council last evening decided to 6ond a message of condolence to tho family of tho lato Mr. A. S. Biss, who was once a member of tho council. The Mayor spoke in torms or praise of the lato Mr. Biss, and said that as a city councillor he did excellent work as a member of tho Financo Committee. The resignations of John Mills, of Paraparaumu, and of T. B. Salmon, of Blenheim, as justices of the peace are gazetted. The return of Patrick Charles Webb, as member for Grey in the House of Representatives, is gazetted.
