ironing rooms nearby bad been busy, too, and the irons were still heating at a circular central coko stove which takes about a dozen irons at a time. Away from tho main building is another and a much larger washbouse, and beyond that the groups of ilats or semi-detached cottages. These cousist of a roomy double bedroom and a Jiitchen and sitting-room combined, the latter equipped with a coal stove. As in the other rooms in the hostel, these are furnished with well-made articles, such as are strictly necessary. There is no -waste of space or using of sliperlluous furniture. But there is solid comfort and cleanliness and plenty of room. Tho rent for these flats —the tenants providing their blankets, linen, and cutlery—has been 15s. a week; hut quite recently this was reduced to 10s. At the present nmo, however, all these rooms are being used as_ separate doublo bedrooms, so great is tho demand for accommodation. AVben the flats are in use as such they are let for two months only. This is done to allow other wives to live near their husband:; while in camp, and to prevent tho use of the flats by permanent tenants, to the exclusion of the relatives of the men of the Expeditionary Forces. There is little doubt that were it not for this restriction the Hals i would never be to lefc. -
Tlio limitation of time in the case of the rooms in tho hoard and residence portion of tho hostel is one mouth, so that the guests are constantly changing. As many as 175 relatives of .soldiers havo occupied rooms in tho hostel at one time, while the maximum number of babies and small children tbat wore congregated thero simultaneously was "10. _ The culinary side of this lingo establishment is most interesting. As may ho expected, tho range for tho cooking is an enormous one, while pantries and other attributes arc in proportion. Ample bathing accommpdation is provided, the water supply coming from the Eeatherston mains, while the drainage is effectively dealt with by septic tanks. Tile hostel is, in short, a healthy, sanitary, busy, and happy place, and a boon to thousands of women whoso menfolk lire in khaki.
