CIVIC AFFAIRS
MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. Tho Wellington City Council met last evening. Tiiero were present:—Tho Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke), Councillors W. T. Hildretl), R. A. Wright, J. Castle, W. J. Thompson, J. O. Shorland, C. 13. Norwood, M. F. Luckie, L. M'Kenzie, A. Veitch, A. 11. Atkinson, W. H. Bennett, J. Godber, G. Frost, and AV. H. P. Barber. Leave of absence was granted to Councillor J. E. Fitzgerald. Tho council declined to depart from tho legal position with respect to rates duo on tlie Wellington Free Kindergarten Association's property in Taranaki Street, and tho Congregational Church property in Cambridge Terrace. The Firtanco Committee reported that they had authorised a refund of rent for the Concert Chamber, amounting to £2 10s., paid hy the Citizens' Christmas Gift Fund Committee (sports stall), owing to the fact that the' hall was not used on account of tho illness of some of the performers.^ Tho following contracts for advertising on the tramcars were approved:— Messrs. Wright, Stephenson, and Co., Ltd., city, and Messrs. W. Campbell, Ltd., city. An application for permission to erect a motor-shed on the road reservation at Kelburn Parade (by excavating below a high-level footpath) was refused. The council consented to the method of subdivision of a block of land twofifths of an aero in extent, •at Tlio Crescent, Roscneath. An application for the issue of a licence to drive a taxicab was refused. Tho applicant had liis licence cancelled in Auckland in 1916, and the police cannot recommend him as being suitable. An offer to dedicate a high-level pathway serving five houses at Maida Vale Road, Roscneath, was not entertained.
The Rosoneath and Oriental _ Bay Municipal Electors' Association is to be informed to the following cffectin leply to a request for the construction of a. footpath on the road from Point Jernbigham round Evans Bay:—"That a footpath at this road will have to bo placed on the seaward side of the road, and that thisk course will necessitate an oxtension of the present Bay wall roir * a portion of Evans Bay. Until a sur ■ is mado and plans are prepared, the consent of tho Marino Department and Harbour Board cannot be obtained. In view of present city works requiring the attention of the engineering staff, the necessary pre■liminary work cannot at present bo undertaken. In addition, with tho enormous expense tbat will be incurred in this undertaking, there is 110 likelihood of money being available in the near future." A yearly lease of Town flelt Section 27 is to be granted to Mr. C. H. Boniface at a rental of £10 per annum. I
