The Hon. G. W. Russeil left for the south last night to attend a function to be held in his own electorate of Avon to-day. He will return to Wellington on Friday morning.
After a long illness Mr. Joseph Ames <lie<l at his late residence, Ellice Street, at 5 p.m. yesterday. Mr. Ames was the third sou of the late James Ames, and was horn in Kaikoura m 1844. His father was trai&'ng in New Zealand waters in the yc*ar 1888-39, and in 1840 he established' a whalmg station on Kapiti Island. Jn 1843 ha took up a second station ati Kaikoura and lived there until his death iu 1850. Mr. Joseph Ames spent some time on the Otago and Thames goldfiolds. He took part in tho Maori war as: a mounted trooper under Captain. _ .Loathani. For some time ho was a Civil! Servant. He was a good sport, and took an active part in rowing, being a mom her of tho Dolly Varden crew. In tho past few years ho had token an interest m horse-racing, and for somO managed tbo totahsator for tt o Imgton Racing Club, when .the races were held at tbo Lowor * -vr* leaves a widow, but no family.
