SMUGGLING TUNGSTEN
IMPORTANT ARRESTS MADE IN NEW YORK.
The United States Attorney recently announced that a plot for _ the expor ation of tungsten from the United States on board the Scandinavian-American liner United States, in violation of the Espionage Act and of President Wilson's Embargo Proclamation, had been frustrated by the arrest of the steward of the liner and two other men. A suit-case in the possession of the steward was found to contain 401b. of tungsten, and further search revealed 1 (501b more concealed under the floor of a stateroom. The two other prisoners were Swedes, vartners m a Swedish book store. The authorities attach considerable importance- to tiio arrests, as the United States Attorney Sivs that tho illicit exportation ot tungsten, presumably for Germany, has been going on for some time.
