PUBLIC SERVICE TOURNEY 'i SATURDAY'S MATCHES The final game in the Public Service tournament, between tho winners of-tho contesting rinks who played on the Thorndon and Wellington greens respectively, was decided on Saturday afternoon on tho Thorndon green. The Post and Telegraph Department had been roturned as- the winners of the competing teams on tho Wellington green on St. Andrew's Day and tha Audit Department were similarly successful on the Thorndon green. Theplayers were as follow:— Post and Telegraph.-G: B. Dall (*.), T. Johnston, J. W. Redmond, A. .T. Markman. Audit.—H. M. Nalder ("■), J. T. Dumbell, C. Holden, R. J. CoLlins.
Tlie first head resulted in Post andt Telegraph scoring 3, and in the second, head the Audit opened their a.Tomifc by scoring 1. Then Dall and his tonin got their eyes in, and despite the strenuous efforts of the Audit added 10 points in the next five heads. Audit managed to add 1 more to their score, but the Post and Telegraph were not to -be denied, and a brace of 2's made their total score as apainst their rivals' '1. Things began to' look one-sided, but Nalder and his' fellow; officers had now struck their ttue ferm. and placed 3 more to their local. Iα the thirteenth head Dall r.nce moie gained a single, but the Audit responc' ed by scoring 1 and then 3, i.nd toidled 11. The Postal officials were on their mettle, but could only add 1, naking; their full score 19 to their opponents' 11. Six heads to go, and 8 to tie cr 9' to win, was a big deficit to make up. Now began the exciting part of the game. Playiug all they know, uoth sides tried their utmost. Time after time , a player would place his Dowl ua tha kitty, onfy to see jit immediately displaced by his opponent's. Audit scored 1, then another 1, then 2, making 15 in all, and three heads to |jo. A nether single left them three behind. In the last head but one yet another single was added to Audit's total. The last head was touch and go right through. With Post and Telegraph i.ying on tba jack, Nalder drove the white ball ii;to the ditch and 'lay one instead. Dall with his last shot was a little short, but hia lead of 2 from the previous head was; sufficient, and his team were hailed as the champion riiik of the Public Service, after a- splendid fight with tha runners-up, who equally deserved victory after such _ a brilliant ■ recovery from a bad beginning. The winning team were a sound and steady quaitet, who played well right throughout the tournament, and thoroughly desotved their euccess. '
