As a sequel to the imposition of £50 fines on two, barmen convioted by the Magistrate, Mr Barton, of breaches Df the anti-shouting regulations, the Hotel Employees' union to-nigM strongly criticised the Magistrate's ac-
tion in imposing such heavy penalties, particularly as one defendant was ft married man. with six children. A series of resolutions was passed, protesting against the regulation itself, against! the provision debarring a convicted barman from employment in hotels for six months,' and against the heavy fines in question. It was also decided to ask other labpur organisations to make representations for a repeal or modification of the regulation, and to forward copies of the resolution to the Minister of Justice, the' Attorney-General, and all Labour members of Parliament.
A subscription list is being circulated among the , public to raise moneyto pay the men's fines. A representative of the Auckland Hotel Union at present in Gisborne pledged his union's support of the protest.
