WOOL-VALUERS AT WORK

CANTERBURY WOOL IN GOOD CONDITION. The valuations under the Government wool scheme were commenced last week. The valuers who are undertaking the work in the Christchurch wool stores are Messrs. Nettleton (supervising valuer), Hargreaves, Leitch, Andrews, and Barber. It is freely stated that the clip for the present season is about the best, that has been stored for the past ten years. Both plains and hill wool is coming off in most excellent condition, being well-grown, clean, and bright, and there is no doubt, that the percentage of the clip that reaches the limit in price will be larger than last year. The actual range of prices given for the different qualities of wools are as follow:— 1 d. d. Suporior Merino combings ...... 181 22} Medium to good merino /. 15} 173 Inferior merino 131 Ml Superior halfbred 18V 213 Medium to good halfbred lo{ 18$ Inferior ltalfbrod 14 15} Superior crossbred 18} 18} Medium lo good crossbred 14 17 Inferior crossbred I' 2 14 Lincoln and Leicester 131 Hi} Lamb—Good 17 20 Lamb—Medium v 11 IG3 The regulations forbid the publication of the prices realised for individual lots of wool sent in, but it may be stated that tho values are well up towards the maximum in the majority of cases. The fact of a. special clip of merino wool in Blenheim being valued recently at 23d. or }d. above the maximum, was explained by tho statement that the valuers are empowered to give a little over tho maximum for specially goods lots of wool. Some anxiety is being caused to handlers of wool by the fact that thero is rather serious congestion in the Lyttelton wool stores at tho present time. Even when the ships at present allocated have taken their lading thero will be about 12.000 bales of last year's wool still held up. and half the storage space occupied, which is needed for tho new clip. Much the samp state of affairs obtains in Christchureh, where there are about .5000 bales of last year's clip still in store. This mean that a creat .deal of labour and trouble is inei'rrer! in staokine up the bales, practically in the roof in some cases, to make* room for tlic necessary display of the incoming clip to allow the valuers adequate space and facilities to work in.
