SILTING AT GISBOKNE. The recent storm at Gisborne has resulted ill a serious silting of the river (says tile "l'overty Kay Herald"). In places on the line of beacons thero is only a depth of' 2ft. 6iu., but alongside this there is deeper water caused by the scour of the hank. The place is practically back to 4ft. for chauuel working, which means that half-tide operations are necessary for the Tuatca and the lighters. Tho improvement; recently effected has boen completely nullified, and a fresh start will have to be made on the bar and up the river by the dredge Maui with her pumps. At the town wharves and in the vicinity there is only Ift. or 18in. at low water, wmsequently the loading and discharging of the lighters has again become an acute problem. There is deeper water on the Haiti side, as usual, and tlie fresh has practically demonstrated that the erection of the groynes proposed by Mr. Leslie Reynolds will hav'e a very beneficial effect In giving increased depth of ivater on the town side of tho river. There is a patch of a large area ivith a depth of only 2ft., and this precludes the Tuatea, getting over the groyne, where there, is somewhat deeper water. The tendering which has taken placo at half-tide ill the past will not now be possible, and practically highwater working will be the order until this patch has been removed. It is a difficult position, and in order to open even a gutter fairway will necessitate pumping in all .probability into tho Waikana© as a temporary expedient. The matter is being gone into, and every effort will be mado, but the inconvenience which the travelling public may cxperience_for some time cannot, he minimised. The depth lower down the channel is practically only 4ft. at low water; and tho lighters, in addition to tho tender, will experience th? full effect of the serious situation revealed by tha Recent. silting of tho river.

The Union Company's steamer Rosamond arrived yesterday from Gisborne, and today will load transhipments for Lyttelton and Dunedin. A limited amount of cargo for Dunedin will be received also. The Himitangi arrived yesterday from Pitt Island and Lyttelton, and will sail at noon to-morrow direct for Waitangi to load sheep and wool for Lyttelton. The Mann, is due to-morrow from Puponga with a load of coal for Wellington. She will sail in the afternoon for Lyttelton, receiving cargo until 3 p.m. The Wellington Stcamßhip Company will dispatch the Baden Powell for New Ply. mouth, and the Huia for Wanganui at 5 p.m. to-day.

The Defender will sail this afternoon direct for Hokitika. The Corinna is due to-morrow from Lyttolton, and will sail in the evening for Nelson and New Plymouth. (

Messrs. Reese Bros.' Kara will arrivo tomorrow from Timaru and Lyttelton, where she loaded produce for Wellington. The colliers I'oherua and Karnmu will arrive early this morning from Westport. Captain 0. Olid, of the Union Company's service, has (cone ashore at Sydney owing to illness. His place has been taken by Captain 11. I*. Davies, who has just returned from holiday leave. Captain A. _T. Toten has taken command of a Union steamer at Sydney in placo of Captain It. L. Davies. Mr. E. O. Young, who has been on leave at Wellington, has joined a Union Company's steamer as third officer, in place of Mr. J. Gaby, who has come ashore on holiday l(»ve. Captain D. Mocdonald. who has been ashore at Auckland, lias taken command of a Union Company's steamer at that port, in place of Captain W. W. Hendor, who has come ashore on holiday leave. The Pateena will sail at 12.45 p.m. to day for Picton and Nelson in her usual running. Tho Mapourika will resume her usual running in the Wellington-Nelson-West, Ooa6t passenger service to-morrow, sailing at 5 p.m. Cargo will bo reoeived until 3 p.m. , Tho Canterbury Company s Breeze arrived early yesterday morning direct from Timaru, and will sail this afternoon for Wanganui. From the latter port she will proceed to Lyttelton to be docked for overhaul.

The Calm will sail this afternoon, receiving cargo until 3 o'clock, for Lyttelton, Bluff, Dunedin, Oamaru, and Timaru. The Hinemoa, in continuation of her trip round the lighthouses, left l'ort Chalmers on Saturday for Bluff. Last week was a busy one on the waterfront at Lyttelton, an unusual number of large vessels requiring labour for discharging and loading operations having visited the port. Tho labour shortage, combined with the local waterßiders' short, working period, has caused much anxiety to shipping agents. On one occasion the agents of a vessel requiring ninety men to effect her discharge, were only able to secure four men until several hours later, when, after, mnch trouble, tho requisite number was secured.

The possibilities of Tolago Bay as a port of call are suggested by the fact that the Union Company's steamer Arahnra, being unable to work Gisborne last Thursday, made for Tolago Bay and sheltered there, and that some 20 of her passengers, rather 'than face a voyage to Auckland and back, decided to land there and make their way overland to Gisborne.

The Waimca will arrive to-morrow morning from Tarakohe with a cargo of ccnent, and will sail at 5 p.m. for Nelson and West Coast.

The Canterbury Shipping Co.'s steimer Breeze is to go into dock at Lyttelton on her arrival from Wellington and nui for her annual overhaul. It is understood that the Calm and Storm, in the same company's fleet, will also go into dock at Lyttelton later. The work of overhauling and surveying these steamers, has previously been done at Port Chalmers.

The bar at Foxtcn, it is reported by the harbourmaster, is very good. Tho channel is running straight out, aloni: the north spit with a depth of 10ft. to 12ft. at high water spring tide, and a, good Bft. at high water neaps. The river channel is good right from the bar up to the wharf, and vessels have no trouble in working the port'.

Mr. 0. F. Morgan, son of Mr. C. E. Morgan, Epnnm. Auckland, who had been in tho service of the P. and 0. Company for the past four years, has passed his examination for a chief marine engineer's certificate.
