MR. CYRIL MAUDE
The appearance hero to-morrow evening of Sir. Cyril Maude is creating a deal more than tho usual interest usually attached to a J. C. Williamson attraction. Mr. Maude will make his initial appearance here as "Grumpy," in the successful play of that name. In England and America Mr. Maude has played "Grumpy" no fewer than 1025 times, and it is spokan of as heing his finest characterisation. In Australia the piece established a record both in Melbourne and Sydney. A leading Sydney critic writes of Mr. Maude as under:—"The character of 'Grumpy' affords Mr. Maude great opportunities, the which he seizes and illustrates in a wonderful manner. The art is supreme. The many exquisite touches of fun, tenderness, and sentiment under the crusty exterior aro admirable, so that quite early in the play 'Grumpy' and his audience are on terms of complete and excellent understanding." It is understood that "Grumpy" is by no means a one-part play. A company consisting mostly of English artists, will support Mr. Maude, all of whom will make first appearances here. The play is in four acts, and abounds in sensation. It is described as a detective comedy drama written on exceedingly novel lines. The fact that it is written by the authors of "Sunday" should detract nothing from its attractiveness. The box plans for "Grumpy," which Mill be played for the first five nights, are now open at the Bristol. On Monday next the second attraction of the season, "General John Regan," will be presented.
