DEFENCE DEPARTMENT AND HOME SERVICE MEN
Sir,—Further to letter signed "Competent" in to-day's Dominion. No sane person grudges a fair wage to any; man, but why in the name of all that is just and righteous should a man drawing, say, lis. a day (seven days a week), with uniform, underclothing, boots, and cap thrown in, bo allowed to foist his wife and family 611 the public and be granted separation allowance for wifo and children when he is not required to be abr sent a single night from homo? It is this crying injustice that is causing so much talk and discontent re the home service men. . Will the Defence Department contradict the repeated statements re allowances and financial aid being granted to men who are already receivr ing a fair wage?—l am, etc., ; . . RIMU. [The matter is fit present receiving the attention of the Defence authorities. It is admitted that in a few cases the payment of separation allowance to home service men, in addition to lodging allow., ance, has made the total wage unduly' ; high. It is ..understood that a' new 6,ys-' tern of payment will be introduced in the near future.] ■ ,
