Tho steamer Msizatlan, flying tho Mexican flag, attempted to send a wireless message to the cruiser Leipzig, containing details of the sailings and positions of British ships. Ine scheme was defeated by tho resourcof illness of Mr. Smith, an English wireless operator, who was aboard. Ho secretly put the wireless out of tunc and altered the wavo length whenever tho German operator was going on duty. Smith occasionally communicated with the Leipzig in case she should guess the wireless was wrong. On ono occasion the captain ordered Smith to send a codp message to the Leipzig, and when Smith refused, as a Briton, the Mazatlan's officers threatened to shoot him. smith pretended to send tho message, and worked the keys so that sparks wero seen.
