CHRISTMAS GIFT FUND
ARRANGEMENTS IN TRAIN. A meoting of tho General Committee of the Citizens' Christmas Gift Fund was held at the Town Hall last night. Mr. B. Keesing presided, in the absence of the chairman. It' appeared that none of the subcommittees had quite their plans for the big effort, but they submitted interim reports which showed that they had not been idle. Generally tho reports were to the effect that the prospects for a successful collection were good. The days will be Friday, November 30, and Saturday, December 1. On Friday there will be stills in the streets, with various devices to attract the attention of the people who may be abroad on that day, and on Saturday there is to be a procession and sports. There will be an individual effort by the Lyall Day Surf Club on their bench on Saturday. Every stall will be taken by some recognised sports club or association, ond it is expected that the number will be ten. The Sports Committee reported that they had arranged to have on the sports programme a series of championship, events, open only to soldiers _in the camps, and an endeavour is being mj!,de to have the soldiers give some kind of a military display also at the sports. One of the attractions of the procession wjl] be a fancy dress and poster competition. . The biggest money-raising device is expected to be the surprise scheme, which the committee are endeavouring to make as alluring as possible to thoso who most readily give up their money when there Is some element of luck in tho scheme.
