DEALING WITH TRUSTS
HOW BRAZIL MANAGED.
Speaking at tho meeting of tho Council of the Central Chamber of Commerce yesterday afternoon, Mr. J. h. Barton said that there was a war of (lea - in» with trusts. Some time ago Brazil, or that part of the Brazilian community interested in coffee, was in the hands ot in American trust, which got big prices for its coffee in the.States, of which the growers got Tory little. To save the "rowers, the Brazilian Government commandeered the whole of the season's output of coffee, and so saved (he industry I hat was being so badly throttled. ■ The Government went out and fought the trust, and having secured the whole of (he coffee output, it was able to say to the trust—"Now, if you want coffee, you must come lo us!" And they had to go -cap in hand-in Ihe end, and pay n fair price for the product. Mr. Barton said he only quoted tho incident as me in which, a trust had been fought and beaten, and which should have some, interest in New Zealand He suggested that some member of the council shimlrt Co into tho details of that case, and bring it before (.ho. chamber for discussion. The president stressed the importance of the subject in view of the fact that New Zealand was threatened with the operations of a meat irust. Mr. 11. Hart (who was absent) was suggested as a member who could do the subject justice.
