Countess of Liverpool Fund Meeting. Tho monthly meeting of the Countess of Liverpool fund Committee was held in the Mayoress's room of tho lown Hall yesterday morning. Mrs. W. Mrs. Townsend proposed and Mrs. Murphy seconded that a vote of sympathy bo passed to Mrs. Luke, whoso health of late has suffered considerably, and tho earnest hope was expressed that 6he would soon be 6Uihciently recovered to be about again. Death of an Early Colonist. The death took place at the residenco of her niece, Mrs. C. Garlick. Tan'eivtua (Auckland), of Mrs. Katarina Simpkins, at tho age of 90 years. The late Mis. Simpkins was born at Mokoia Island, Rotorua, her father, Phillip Tapsall, being a Danish naval offioer. who had fought Rgainet Neleon at the .Battle of Copenhagen, and later in New Zealand founded tho European settlements of Maketu nnd Whakiitane. The late Mrs. Simpkius'a mother was Hine Turama, a chieftainees of high rank of tho Ngati Jtautawa and Ngati Whakaue tribes. ' The lato Mr. Simpkina came out with Sir William Tanner, when the latter founderf his colonies in South Africa and at 'Perth, West Australia, afterwards coming to New Zealand, where about 1838, ho turned hie attention to whaling, and afterwards to trading with the Natives on this coast. Ho finally settled in the Bay of Plenty. In 1853 he married tho deceased lady, and they lived for a timein Whakatane. Mr. Simpkins afterwards bought land near Auckland, which he farmed for a short period, but returned and resided on Whale. Island a few years later. The family finally settled in Whakatane, where they worked both the Kopeopeo and Mill farms. They were combining farming and storekeoping during the Te Kooti troubles, and the late Mrs. Simpkins fled with all the other women in the place to Matata nt the time w"nen To Kooti sacked Whakatane in 18G9. Her only (laughter (Mrs. J. M'Alister) predeceased her by about seven years. Mr. and Mrs. 0. S. Watkins are visiting Christchurch. Contributions to the Countess of Liverpool Fund have been received from the following:—Miss M. Clapham, Miss E. Halse, Mrs. W. S. Kerr, Miss Reeves, Miss Panitt, Mrs. Baumgart. Mre. Mrs. Rachael Burch, a very old Wairarapa resident, who colebrated her 9ith birthday recently, passed away at Grcytoivn early yesterday morning. The deceased was one of the early pioneers. She li;uves two sons, Messrs. Basil and Charles, and two daughters, Mesdames J. Skcet and C. J. .lury, and a great many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Mrs. Seymour Vale, whose name appeared on the last Birthday Honours /ist, has had eouferred upon, her the silver medal of tho Kaisar-i-Hind Order, "in recognition of hor invaluable help and untiring energy in war work in India." She is the wife of Cqmninnder Seymour Vale, and an Australian by birth. Since her marriage Mrs. Vale has lived in India.
