His Excellency (ho Governor-General has been advised by telegraph that His Majesty tho King has been graciously pleased to confer upon Jliss Hester Maclean, matron-in-chief of tho New Zealand Army Cursing Services, tho First Class of the Royal Red Cross Decoration.

A Press Association cablegram from London stales that tho liritish Food Controller (Lord lihondda) has appointed Mr. I:'. T. Uoyes, of New Zealand, to lie Director of Meat Supplies. Mr. Uoyos has been connected with the New Zealand Refrigerating Company (formerly known as tho Christchurch Meat Company) for some timo as its secretary in Christchurch, and was afterwards sent to London to act as- its representative. Before ho went to Christchurch he was connected with tho Ocean Beach Meat Works, Otago. He is a connection ot Sir Joseph Ward. Corporal H. E. Jonkinson, whose death from wounds is reported in the casualty list published to-day, was a 6on of Mr. J. E. Jenkin6on, of Wellington, and beforo enlisting for service wos a member of the literary staff of The DOMINION. The late Corporal Jonkinson served in Ramon with the original force, and, on his return to New Zealand, resumed his civilian occupation, but later enlisted tor service in France. Ho ivas particularly well known and popular in r,ivimming and yachting circles, and was an expert swimmer and water-polo player. His brother is still serving at tlie front.

Bombardier 11. F. Cobb, who was killed in actiun in Franco on October 11, was the eldest son of Mr. and Jlrs. Robert Cobb, of Otaki. He was well known in the Kmneroa district, having farmed there from tho time he left Wangaimi Collegiate School until the war broke out, when ho enlisted and went out with tho Jlain Body. Though engaged in practically all the heavy fighting in France, being right through t he Sonnne, the Messines, and other great battles, where, he did good work and was twico mentioned in dispatches, he canio through without n hurt, until October 11, when ho was killed in action.

lMoctive-Sergennt J. Cassells, of Hamilton, is at present on a visit to Wellington. Tho' following appointments have wen made by the Wellington Education Board :—Petone (assistant), Miss Hitchings; Mana, (solo teacher), Mr. .T. Mnloney; Waikanao (assistant), Miss M. if. Hughes. Tho Mayor communicated to Inst evening's meeting of till* City Council news of the death in action of two former employees, Sergeant E. N. Player and Lieutenant W. 11. iloore. 'l'lio former had been n wages olerk, and the latter a tramways niotorman. Councillors, on the invitation Vf the Mayoi', rose m token of respect to the fallen.
