A. waTtler at the main camp of the Prisons Department's road construction works states that early yesterday morning, though the summit of the volcano was hidden, hngo volumes of blnck smoke were visible for a few momenta, rising to a preat height. One of the most startling , explosions was heard at 10.30 this morning.
Twenty-seven candidates were presented in the practical examination of the Associated Board of theH.A.M. andK.C.tJ., London, at Maelerton, and of these twenty-four passed.
Since the Opaki school was destroyed by fire the children of the district are being- taught in one of tho buildings on the Opaki racecourse.
The rainfall registered in Masterton for the month of October was 2.27 inches, compared with 4.70 inches tor the same month last year.
