While some doubt, is justified of to who fired the first shot in the war Mr. Lovat Fraser, in "War Illustrated, sugcests that tho distinction belongs to an unknown German, who with others annul n t three French Customs officers on Hie morning of Sunday, August 2 1914, at a point nbout oisht miles east of the fortress of Belfort. "The Germans suddenly began shontinK and fired about fifteen shots in all. The three Frenchmen withdrew without replying, and tamed out the other seven members of the Customs staff.
