EDUCATION BOARD FUNDS
:'A clause of the Statute Law Amendlaent Bill, passed by the Legislative Council yesterday,- contains amended provisions as to the. funds land, accounts of education boards. It. provides that each, ■board shall place money granted for maintenance • and repair of schools in one fond, money granted for the replacement of buildintrsJn a second fund, and money granted for new- buildings in A third fund. The Minister of Education explained that this clause had ■■■ been drafted to prevent the misuse of funds that had occurred in past years, many ■'■boards having used for .one purpose Money granted them for another purpose. A proviso is attached to the «lause that "except in so far-as may otherwise, be agreed upon between the Minister and the board, balances in the. ftands of- the boards ehall be placed in the replacement fund. •''•■■■ ■ • The Hon.' J. G. W. Aitken said that /the Wellington Education Board .was in a special position. It had not underspent/its replacement funds, and it had in hand some money set asido for main-
tenance purposes. He wished the Minis- , ter to recognise the rights of the Wellington Board. ■ '■■.•... §r Francis Bell stated, in reply, that the. maintenance 1 funds' of the Wellington Board would be safeguarded.
