MR. WEBB'S APPEAL
AND THE JUNES DEPARTMENT. Sir,—ln your report of the evidence given in Mr. Webb's appeal case, it is made to appear that reflections were ca6t on Air. Reed, the inspecting engineer in the Mines Department. We wish to state that on the contrary the miners have every confidence- in Mr. Heed as a capable, efficient, and impartial officer, who has done much to improvo the safety and general working conditions in the mines throughout New Zealand.—We are, etc., J. M'COMBS. J. ARBUCKLE. [■presumably the "reflections" referred to were the statements made by Mr. Arbuckle, alleging failure on the part of the Mines Department to enforce certain statutory safeguards in mines. We merely reported the evidence of Mr. Arbuckle and the statements, by Mr. M'Combs. Mr. Reed was called to refute certain allegations concerning his Department, and did so.l
