Entertainment at Maranui. Yesterday evening an entertainment organised by Mr. and Mrs. Culford i3ell and given ny their pupils.ires held in tlio Maranui Churoh Hall in aid of the Wellington Kindergarten Associntion's Building Fund. The hall was crowded with a most appreciative audience : and the programmo wae thoroughly et.joyed, several of the performers ehowing marked ability in the course of their contributions. The first item, to be given was a dramatic sketoh, "The Lost Puree," in which the parts were taken by D. M'Konzie, Keith Ixingmore, Keith Roe, Tasman Taylor, Jack Broadhouse. Jack Williams, and Willie ICnox. Following wera recitations given by Feo Smythe, Maiwell Bosher, Jim Gilberd, Olga Gilherd, and Leah Hyman, who gave very oreditable performances. In a fairy playlet, "Princess Snowwhite," the ' characters were taken by' Doris Neale, Josephine Skegg, Nancy Cashman, Fanny llyman, Jack Nealo, and Willie Knox, with much bucobss. A character sketch, "The Landlady," was given by Leith Riddell, a charaoter monologue, "Christmue Bells," by Thelma Aitken, and a recitation, "Maoriland" (in character), by Lettie Harris.
The goblin play, "Transformed," was another of ,the outstanding items of tho programme, the characters boing taken by Pearl Jacobs, Ethel Sullivan, Kathleen Eeeoe, Eita M'Gee, Leah Hyman, Linda Eoberts, Vera Weight, Iris Wilkinson, Feo Smythe, Jim Gilberd and Oiga Gilberd. The incidental music for tho play was supplied by Miss Flo Gow. Another excellent item was the fairy play whioh followed, "The Three Gifts. In this the following took part:—Brenda Meade, Joyce Whitehead, Era Clay, liita Howe, Ifollie M/Whannell, .Doris Organ, Thelma Perkis, Eaytnond Whitehead, and Jack Telford. Miss Doris Hollings was at the piano. Altogether a programme of muoh merit was presented, and appreciation was very manifest on .the part of the andience. At tho close of the evening" the chairman. Mr. X. Sando, made very appreciative references to tho entertainment which had been provided by Mr. , and Mrs. Cnlford Bell and the debt which they owed them for their generous assistance to the oause of the Kindergarten Building Fund. Eastbourne Social Club. The opening night of the Eastbourne Social Club was held last Saturday. The popularity of the club was exemplified by the large attendance of members, the hall being taxed to its utmost capacity. Mr. Bennett occupied the chair, and tho first portion of the evening's entertainment was devoted to a progressive euchre party. The prize-winners were as follows:—Lady, Mrs. Heenan; gentleman, Mr. W. Wise; consolation (lady), Mrs. Cord; gentleman, Mr. Aislabie. After an excellent supper, served by the ladies' committee, the newly-formed orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Cimino, contributed two delightful little items. Considering that they have only been in existence three weeks, their performance was very creditable. Messrs. Pago, Bennett, Warren, and Powell were also extremely good in _ their various items. Tho club is now in a very flourishing stato. and fills a long-felt want at tho Bay. Social evenings are to be hold monthly (hiring the summer and fortnightly during the winter.

Johnston, books; Mrs. Bett, books; Mrs. Curie, cake; Miss Mackenzie, fruit and cakos. Lindsays Ltd. and the Commercial Assurance Company have been very kind in allowing parcels to be left for the hospital and in many other ways as well.
The death took place at "Rothway," Lecston,' of Mrs. Maria Barker, one of tho early settlers of the EUesmero district. The lato Mrs. Barker arrived in New Zealand by the sailer Robert Small, landing in Lyttelton on January 1, 1860. She canio out to reside with her uncle, Mr. Wilson, nurseryman, St. Albans, and was married to Mr. George Barker in 1864 by the Rev. James Bullcr, taking up her residence in Leeston in 1867. Two sons Mr. Norman Barker, of Stoke, NelRon, and' Mr. Herbert T. Barker, of "Rptbway," Leeston. with one daughter, Mrs. Theo. T. Fraser, of Auckland, survive tho late pioneer.
Mrs. Stratton, of Hastings, is staying at the Royal Oak Hotel. She intends to •proceed to Chrietcbirch for Carnival Week.

More carvinjr tools for the Taumaru Convalescent: Hospital, IJowry Bay, would be very useful, as a great deal of earring is now done thero by the soldiers. It has been siiggeeted that anyone malting jam should at the same time make a few pots for the hospital. Snch gifts would be very much appreciated.

This morning the Red Triangle Cake I Room, which has been bo successfully or- I eanised by members of the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Y.M.C.A., will be in charge of Mcsdames Piper and Bray, to whom all contributions should, be sent >n. at the association's buildings in ,'vilhs Street. The room is.'centrally situated in Lambton Quay, end every Wednesday it is open for the sale of such, wares as home-made cakes, sweets, jams.preserves and flowers. The proceeds go to swell the funds needed to carry on the war work of the Y.M.C.A.
